Plains Presbyterian parish in Mid Canterbury is arguably the most geographically widespread of all such parishes being formed throughout New Zealand. It runs from the high country in the west to the eastern coastline, a distance of some 70 km. It also covers some 45 – 50km from north to south. Its main worship centres are based at Rakaia, Methven and Mayfield with each township owning its own church and manse. Mayfield district also has smaller worship centres at Carew and Staveley and Mt. Somers.
